Stillness in Motion Series
A Collaboration between Heaven and Earth: Tian Gong meets Terra’ s Temple

Mondays, 7:30- 9:30 PM
@ Terra’s Temple
654 Oakland Ave
Oakland 94611

Donation: $10 Non-Temple Members/ Free with Membership Pass

Join Tiffany Foo and Kevin (Chance) Ryan every Monday eve for a weekly offering of Stillness in Motion- a balance of meditation and movement, a cultivation of peace and vitality, and a practice of inquiry and expansion. Stillness in Motion is composed of a half hour guided meditation followed by an hour long qi gong practice. Cultivate a More Centered, Peaceful and Vital You. Come early to pray, connect to source and re- center in the temple space. Stay after for a hot tub soak.

We are committed to cultivating wholeness on the planet one breath and one movement at a time. We believe that your body is your most sacred space, and feel that tending yourself is an essential part of any sacred work. Your personal well-ness is intimately connected to the wellness of the entire planet. Healing the planet begins with healing yourself. Thus, we must tend to ourselves to best tend to the world.

Please See Further Details Below.

MatterN2Light Meditations
MatterN2Light Meditations is a synthesis of ten years worth of meditation and personal experimentation into various schools and practices of internal inquiry. Tiffany Foo takes you on a guided journey into the deeper recesses of your mind, your body and the great cosmos beyond. Together, we will unpack and play with your relationship to: 1) your own interiority; 2) your body; 3) your energetic awareness; 4) others as energetic beings and 5) your environment.

Tiffany Foo is a Conscious Journeying, warrior- poeting, kung fu and qi gong loving, Integral Inquiring Priestess, Alchemist and Energy Weaver committed to “living the difference” by working towards her own and other’s personal embodied unfolding and activation. She has dedicated this life to the uncovering, honoring and living from full spectrum consciousness. Her mission, as she sees it, is to enhance life by illuminating the inherent self- healing properties and activating the passion within each of us to best serve ourselves and the greater world of which we are a part.

Tian Gong
Tian Gong (Universal Unification) is a profound purification practice of the heart and Soul: essence being simplicity, it quickly and effectively accelerates physical health and spiritual growth. Chance Ryan facilitates a qi gong practice that integrates body, mind & soul work to accelerate personal growth & development. This unique form of Qi Gong incorporates meditation, physical movement, sound healing, Eastern & Western spiritual wisdom & ancient alchemical practices. Our day-to-day schedule, the deterioration of the environment and even negativity from others can often leave us with barely enough energy to smile or even too ill to function. Qi Gong, though ancient, is a great counterbalance to our modern challenges because it works quickly without side effects to clear our heads, restore our bodies and deepen our inner peace. Not only can it supplement the energy we get from breathing eating and sleeping, it also reduces the body’s normal energy needs.

Kevin Ryan is originally from Eugene, Oregon. He began practicing Tian Gong nearly two years ago after moving to Oakland, and has experienced profound benefits! He also enjoys martial arts, dance, yoga, and sound art.

The Vision: It began as a personal commitment to myself. It was during a powerful workshop on transformational leadership that I uncovered how I could best serve the world. I had been struggling to synthesize what I saw as two divergent life goals: a path towards enlightenment and a path towards empowerment. In reconciling my two paths, I realized my multiple roles as holistic wellness facilitator (healer), social transformer (activist), community builder (connector) and spiritual inquirer (practitioner) were united in a common mission- facilitating the embodiment of my wisdom and my beliefs in passionate global action. In that moment, I committed myself to passionate service- to accessing and living from my passion in service to my self, my community and the world. And then I envisioned a world where everyone was accessing, living and serving from their passion. Project Empassionment arose from my belief in the possibility of such a world and is my offering in support of the global shift arising across the planet. My name is Tiffany Foo and I am an alchemist working towards transmuting personal and collective passion into empassioned action in the world. I want to live in a world where our greatest envisioning of both empowerment and enlightenment are synthesized in passionate action toward transformation that is in highest service to oneself, one’s community and the planet. Won’ t you join me?

9-9-9: Negotiating the Portal

By Deborah

September 9, a powerful portal opens, allowing us to shift to a higher resonance within the new frequencies it offers. These frequencies are here to fill the space cleared by this summer’s cosmic cleansing.

The Earth’s Crystal Vortexes

The energies of this portal contain codes and keys that activate all crystalline structures on the planet. In fact, this cosmic shift represents one of the most powerful activations of crystalline energy ever to occur on planet Earth.

Those located near the Earth’s crystal centers will experience the most potent activations. These include the crystal vortexes of Arkansas, Shasta, and Brazil. The crystal vortex of Arkansas will trigger the awakening of many new grid keepers and lightworkers and signal migrations to vortex points of Eureka Springs, Hot Springs and Mount Magazine.

Physical and Emotional Shifts

It’s no surprise that intense physical shifts will be experienced during this timeframe. The portal energies will act upon crystalline forms within the body. Each individual will experience this activation according to their unique vibration. Some may experience new levels of clearing while others may step into elevated feeling states where they are able to view new fields of possibility for their personal journey and for the collective consciousness.

This portal activation represents a new departure from lower-vibrational scenarios that have held humanity into cycles of emotional drama for centuries. The entire collective consciousness will take a step away from “implants” to the human timeline that have held hearts and minds captive to images of suffering and trauma. This “insert” distorted the human ascension model to one of struggle, suffering and crucifixion.

This crystalline activation now enables powers of inner seeing that shine a bright light on all such distortions, allowing souls to unite in vibratory patterns of joy, bliss and unconditional love.

Facilitating Energetic Shifts

To help facilitate the physical shifts now taking place, eat a living foods diet that allows the body to align more easily with the new frequencies. Meditate on joy and bliss. Open your heart to unconditional love. See the light flowing from your heart center in a crystalline sphere. Surround everything that comes before you in this radiant light, allowing any lower vibrations to be transmuted.

This is a time to set aside your conscious mind’s need to understand all experiences. Enter a quiet space of trust, allowing and observing. Breathe in and out, releasing on the out breath everything that stands in the way of integrating the new energies. Breathe in frequencies aligned with joy and bliss, anchoring them more strongly into your energy field.

Set your intentions to remember your dreams. During this time, it is possible to receive vivid and lucid dreams of new realities now being encoded into your DNA. Your guides will weave symbolic storylines into your subconscious to help you perceive steps you can take to calibrate your consciousness with the frequencies contained within this portal of crystalline awakening.

This is an invitation *

“There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on to the shore. They will feel they are being torn apart and will suffer greatly. Know the river has a destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above the water.

And I say, see who is in there with you and celebrate. At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally. Least of all, ourselves. For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.

The time of the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves!

Banish the word struggle from your attitude and your vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.

We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Message from the Elders of the Hopi Nation (January 12, 2003)

*******

I Begin Where I am Standing

I have finally arrived here. Borrowing the words of Alfred D’Souza, “For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin, real life. But there was always something in the way; something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business to attend to, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”

“A human being is part of the whole, called by us “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and his feelings as something separated from the rest- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole [of] nature in its beauty.”

~ Albert Einstein, 1954

How do we go about resolving Einstein’s dilemma and widen our compassionate embrace? Why is a focus on expanding consciousness important for effective social change? How can we integrate the new understandings we discover in order to create a healthier and more sustainable society? The luminous poet-activist, Audre Lorde says, “The quality of light by which we scrutinize our lives has direct bearing upon the product which we live, and upon the changes which we hope to bring about through those lives.” I am intrigued by the way a practice, activism, is not only informed, refined and changed by but also informs, refines and changes the very world upon which it acts. Such inquiries provide the context for this paper’s exploration of the relationship between the processes of personal empowerment, collective/social transformation and systemic change.

Crisis Demands Redress

Currently we are poised at the new edge of an emerging dimensional paradigm of reflective consciousness. A global threat of climate change, environmental degradation and a lack of resources, poverty and oppression upset the stability of our world and create an internal threat that challenges the very assumptions of our assumed identities. We are living in a time of whole system transition on a personal and planetary scale that affects every aspect of life as we know it. Although human societies have confronted major hurdles throughout history, the challenges of our era are unique. Never before has humanity been capable of such planetary- scale mass destruction. Moreover, never before has humanity been so perfectly situated to cultivate planetary- scale mass connection and communication. History supports the idea that we seem to grow only through the push of dire necessity. The formidable challenges that lie before us seem almost designed to provide us with the crisis required to propel us out of our lethargic complacency.

Social action practices, historically, have not reflected the entire multi-faceted process of change. A paper prepared by the Think Sangha for Sulak Sivaraksa as part of the Lambeth, UK meeting with the World Bank and religious leaders (Hochachka, 1998), explains how the essential difficulty in the development process is that structural reform has come before the development of human capacity to deal with it. In other words, while human technical capacities span the globe- the majority of the human population has not yet developed the conscious awareness sufficient to understand the dimensions and ramifications of such global processes, nor the capacities to act accordingly.

According to Paul Hawken (2007), over two million organizations are working toward ecological sustainability and social justice. Pointing out the complexity of this web of individual movements, Hawken notes that the unifying factor of this meta- movement is ideas rather than ideologies that “compromise design as much as action, imagination as much as organization (2007, p. 14).” This great intertwining stands as poignant example to the fact that salvation will not be found in the doctrines of a single system. Rather, the movement is arising from the bottom up, the local is working towards the global and cells of social activists are each contributing to the emerging global paradigm.

Albert Einstein also sagely noted, “The world we have made as a result of the level of thinking we have done thus far creates problems that we cannot solve at the same level at which we have created them… We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humankind is to survive.” Patterns of possibility are emerging that have never before been available to all the earth’s people and to the whole planet. The entirety of the global problem must be addressed as an interrelated whole. From such a system’s view, the activist, herself is located within a larger nexxus of multiple systems and multiple perspectives and transformative power lies in the recognition of how they are constantly informing, engaging and co-creating with each other. Attending this broader spectrum of needs requires a new approach to activism and a new breed of activist to facilitate the shift towards a new global paradigm.

The Supremacy of Love

John Mack (1999, p. 27) contends that a planetary cosmology of compassion probably cannot be achieved by measuring our reactions to or talking about the problem for “only experiences that profoundly alter our view of nature and reconnect us with the divinity within ourselves and in the environment can empower people to commit themselves to the prodigious task before them.” Thus, the therapeutic methods and transformative practices must be powerful enough to shift the ground of our being so that we experience as deeply as possible what social and environmental activist, Gail Hochachka (2002, p.28) terms both “a cognitive revolution and a spiritual awakening.”

Underlying the diversity or our experiences and situations is the notion of the universal recurrence of philosophical insight independent of epoch or culture, including universal truths on the nature of reality, humanity and consciousness referred to as the perennial wisdom. Accordingly, this fundamental telos of the cosmos aligns the immanent with the transcendent, asserting that self/ particulars and divinity/ absolute are, in essence, one. Though each form is separate from other forms, in reality they are all forms of the same unity of life.

Meher Baba states that, love pervades the universe. “It is for love that the whole universe sprang into existence and it is for the sake of love that it is kept going (Baba, 163).” Taking our cue from the universe, unconditional, divine love is for the One in the many. Moving beyond the domain of duality to become one with God, the work of activists operating from love- out of love, in service to love- is inherently sustainable.

Jiddu Krishnamurti further elucidates, “When there is space between you and the object you are observing you will know there is no love, and without love, however hard you try to reform the world or bring about a new social order or however much you talk about improvements, you will only create agony. So it is up to you.” How does divinity work in the world? Divinity works through us. We are, then, in a sense, agents of divine love.

In his book, Awakening Earth, Duane Elgin (1993, p. 151) suggests that it is through the awakening to our consciousness that the personal becomes the expression of the transcendent. Within this prescription, pluralistic pragmatism directs the action and the evolutionary motion of our personal, species and planetary development. Thus, external demands for action create internal demands for a mental construct with the capacity to address those external challenges.

Elgin (1993, p.272) asserts, “Fundamental to building a sustainable future is finding a common ground of human experience and a shared vision of evolutionary potential that transcends the differences that now divide humanity.” This reconciliation is a call to the species maturity that is being evoked by this time of initiation, as we move from an individual journey to a journey in communion with the rest of life. Life exists within life and everything, including humanity, is a reflection of a single, creative expression- a uni-verse. From this perspective, a personal existential crisis of meaning and belonging parallels the crisis of a world on the verge of cataclysmic catastrophe thus suggesting that a failure to resolve one crisis is both self and world shattering.

Shifting from an anthropocentric to a cosmocentric approach to evolution, transforms the journey of awakening from a strictly human endeavor to a project that concerns all life throughout the entire cosmos. Evolution, according to Elgin (1993), is a truly universal enterprise of which the individual, the human species and even the planet Earth are but single nested participants. Thus, from a holarchical perspective, humanity serves as the vehicle through which the earth is becoming conscious of itself. In our awakening, the earth awakens as well.

The Role of One Self

Deep self- examination where individuals re-think what role they play in the community, society, environment, or even the world, is the beginning of the transformative shift from egocentric perspectives towards more worldcentric vision and action. Understanding the dependent origin of all things, we realize that everything is connected, that everything is co- creating everything else. In service, we acknowledge the supremacy of our humanity over our expertise. Activism and social change are not relegated to those few supremely passionate individuals who have committed the entirety of their lives to fighting the good fight, nor is it the exclusive domain of the bleeding heart idealists pouring their time and energy into saving the world. Far from being mired in denial or despair about the current world situation, the new activist- practitioners are acutely aware of the inner and outer forces that perpetuate the destructive velocities in our world. For the new breed of activist, inner transformation and social transformation are inseparably meshed.

To comprehensively address and attend to these very complex issues a plan of action must simultaneously support both internal and external transformation. It is essential to include interiority in activism. Abraham Maslow (1969) notes, “No social reforms, no beautiful programs or laws will be of any consequence unless people are healthy enough, evolved enough, … to understand them and to want to put them into practice in the right way.” True development is a never- ending process that has to do with satisfying the basic material needs of people and their intangible, psychological needs which make up the qualitative aspects of life- health, love, respect and safety.

Furthermore, the health of the human psyche is linked to community health. Community wellbeing, in turn, involves the feelings, ideas, beliefs, emotions and perspectives of individuals within the culture itself. Dr. Monica Sharma, Director of Leadership and Capacity Development for the United Nations, believes that in the context of global development, the causes of under-development and the patterns that perpetuate it lie in the domains of the personal and social attitudes, perceptions, beliefs, practices and norms of both individuals and the communities they are a part of (Sharma, 2006). Social institutions and policies that seek to usher sustainable societies cannot take root and survive without deeply ingrained values to sustain them. Thus, to solve today’s complex global problems requires worldviews and capacities that can understand and work with interconnectedness. In viewing the global problematique as symptoms of a more fundamental, deeper rooted crisis, answers will arise through a deeper and more profound understanding of oneself and the world of which they are a part.

Recognizing the self’s embeddedness within a framework of interdependence- to be in the world is to be in relationship with it- we can see how profoundly our individual states and actions affect the whole. In his groundbreaking work, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paolo Freire expounds the essential and empowering doctrine of personhood, every individuals right to being a Subject, an “I” who acts upon, in and transforms the world. An awareness of self and the self- authorship that accompanies this recognition is essential for the personal efficacy necessary to serve as an actor and co-creator of history and an agent of change. In the Reality of Aid 2004, Kevin Barr, of the Ecumenical Center for Research and Advocacy, illuminates the role of awareness in the development process- conscientization. “Through conscientization, people can be assisted to become more aware, so they are empowered. Empowerment then leads to involvement and involvement leads to the transformation of society, in the interests of the needs of all people- not just a few (Barr, 2004, p.89).”

According to Jack Kornfield (2000), “It is I who must love myself. No one else can make me feel whole. Only I can provide that love. Now I know that wholeness is always accessible to me and all beings everywhere. This knowing allows me to live with a new peacefulness and kindness to myself and others. In the simplest way, it has changed my whole life.” Thus, an expanded and holistic sense of care and concern for all things begins with the embodying that idea within the self.

In Service

Beyond self inquiry is praxis. Looking within is only the first step. Self inquiry without engagement is spirituality without application in the world. The challenge of the spiritually minded individual is to bring one’s spirituality into the world. This is most easily accomplished through service. Expounding upon the concept of interconnectedness, Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D. (1999) illuminates the different ways of viewing and engaging life: helping, fixing and serving. Remen asserts that whereas fixing and helping are the work of the ego, only service is an expression of the soul, an instrument of divine love.

Fixing and helping sustain the space of separation which both Krishnamurit and Meher Baba eloquently argued against. According to Remen, fixing and helping create distance between people, an experience of difference and we cannot serve at a distance. “We can only serve that to which we are profoundly connected; that which we are willing to touch. Fixing and helping are strategies to repair life. We serve life not because it is broken but because it is holy (Remen, 1999).”

The dynamic of love, from the perspective of Meher Baba, is highly purposive. Love not only gives meaning and value to all the happenings in the world of duality but through its very existence stands as challenge to that duality. In the words of Remen (1999, p. 3), “Service is not an experience of strength or expertise; serving is an experience of mystery, surrender and awe. Helpers and fixers feel casual. Servers may experience from time to time a sense of being used by larger unknown forces. Those who serve have traded a sense of mastery for an experience of mystery, and in doing so have transformed their work and their lives into practice.” Ultimately, service is tapping the sacred in service to strategic and often secular action.

Ultimately the essence of activism is really the question of what capacity of heart does one have to just be in the world? The challenge of the new activism is the challenge to bring spirituality and values into their worldly work. In the words of Monica Sharma (2006), “I wanted to learn a more heartfelt and effective way of serving in the world. I’m clear that we are not going to create positive social change if we’re only about opposition. Many revolutionaries haven’t transformed their lives and are working from hate rather than love. This won’t create anything that is better than what we have now.”

The Role of All of Us

In the new activism, consciousness tends towards nonduality, based not on stereotypical activist’s “us-versus-them” thinking but on interconnection and a sense of oneness with all of life. With the embrasure of more worldcentric views, community building plays an integral role in social transformation. I, as the sum of all my individual holonic parts, acknowledge and honor, you, the sum of all your individual holonic parts. Expanded conceptions of what comprises one’s world enables an individual to maintain boundaries of distinction between self and other, or what is mine and what is theirs, while simultaneously extending the distinct self to that distinct other in the hopes of together conspiring a new way of making meaning.

Relationships are a fundamental factor in the individual growth process. As Carl Rogers beautifully acknowledged, our personalities become visible to us primarily through relating to others. Recognizing the innate wholeness of myself and others requires me to acknowledge that our minds, feelings, ambitions, and ideals all express some living force that dwells mysteriously within the core of our being. The purpose is then not to limit through definition but rather to expand through inquiry; not to find oneself but rather to explore the vast recesses of the self, and finally transcend them. Such an approach to life affirms and gives meaning to a participatory human experience.

Relationships can be conceived in terms of compounded meaning making. Furthermore, this cooperative commitment to the cultivation of something beyond what we could as singular individuals engaged in elemental meaning making envision/ create extends beyond mere compounds (element-element meaning making) to ever increasingly complex enactment within the world (element- compound meaning making and compound-compound meaning making). Together we invest our wholes in the sustainable creation of a greater and more complex whole.

Sacred Service

The promise of collective and systemic transformation is, I believe, the reason we wade into the muck of elemental alchemical processes of self transformation in the first place. In my words, “I have a very strong sense of being responsible to the world, that I can’t just live for my enjoyment, but just the fact of being in the world gives me an obligation to do what I can to make the world a better place to live in no matter how small a scale that may be.” Being the change that I wish to see, in being the change that Gandhi sagely advised each of us to be, I am devoted to an every day mindful practice of action. It is my belief that a personal commitment to love engenders a way of living and being in the world. For with an affirmation of life naturally arises an inclination to promote and sustain love in oneself, and more expansively in others as well as the world.

Sacred service is conscious activism that enlists spirituality for social change. For questing individuals located in that wondrous and frightening place somewhere between psychological stability and spiritual transcendence, conscious activism extends an invitation to explore these questions and participate in what Ken Wilber (2007, p. 125) calls, “the extraordinary unfolding and enfolding, developing and enveloping, transcending and including, negating and preserving, that is conscious evolution.”

Conscious activism, as described by Andrew Beath, founder of EarthWays (2006), engages the world by expressing our most profound understanding of natural harmony. This form of activism endeavors to open the compassionate heart of each person, on all sides of an issue. “This can only happen if we expand our own awareness- individual transformation is essential for global change. By healing ourselves we bring health to the whole.”

The role of the activist- practitioner, like that of the consummate Taoist master, is thus to offer needed assistance without interference or judgement. According to Hochachka, the role of the activist-practitioner in facilitating and understanding this process of transformation requires an understanding of personal growth or psychological development as well as the cultivation of not just their own capacity but their own consciousness to best serve and hold space for such shifts in others. Changes in personal actions and behaviors are usually sparked by new feelings and understandings of one’s reality that eclipse, and also add to, the old worldview. A worldcentric awareness begins to illuminate the false boundaries between each of us and the environment. Activist- practitioners have an immense responsibility to work with a more worldcentric awareness.

Conscious activism is activism from the heart. It is composed of loving kindness and requires nothing in return. These subtle and profound shifts, or transformations of consciousness, start in the mind of the individual, rippling outwards into the collective consciousness and thus become appropriated within the cultural discourse and expressed in its values. Wholly embracing the principle of personal affectiveness: How am I going to change to change the world?” one can, using all the tools at one’s disposal in the service of one’s vision, with determined action over time, enhance what is.

The intention is to question what we can do to live in alignment with our values and convictions and to challenge the institutions that are shaping the course of our lives. Service rests on the premise that the nature of life is sacred, that life is a holy mystery which has an unknown purpose. When we serve, we know that we belong to life and to that purpose. From the perspective of service, we are all connected: All suffering is like my suffering and all joy is like my joy. The impulse to serve emerges naturally and inevitably from this way of seeing. There is perfection in the unfolding universe that is grander than any individual act of destruction. In the words of Baba Dioum’s (1968), “in the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we have been taught.”
